What it is about

Board Member Refuses to Meet with Constituents

Board members are elected by us. In return for our vote and the benefits they receive, they have an obligation to hear our concerns - and not just in the 3 minutes we have to speak during public comment! Josie Sanchez refuses to meet. It's not that she is a bad person, she has personal reasons she has explained why it is not possible. But the fact of the matter is our hospital is in crisis and the situation requires board members do more than just show up at their monthly meetings. Most of all, they need to be able to meet with members of the public to have robust dialog about the situation. Instead, Ms. Sanchez and her colleagues only hear from 1 voice: the HHH Administration that some could say merely want to keep their jobs, not do what's best.

Map of Zone 4
We Have To Get Our Noses Under The Tent
  • This is a very secretive board and administration:
  • We get "whipsawed" on information. We never know if we can trust it or not. Even a federal judge rebuked them over the sham information used in Bankruptucy Court filings.
  • Lack of internal controls. Not only did they pay legal bills twice, they and their $500.00 per hour advisors on accounts payable missed. it.
  • The same day they file papers with the US Bankruptcy Court stating that a $10.0 million loan from the State of California has been denied, the Administration of HHH, in a board meeting, discussed how the loan in question is coming.
  • Most discussions are in "closed session" under the guise of "trade secrets" and litigation.
  • Most public records requests are slow-walked and redacted.
  • There are serious financial issues, but more importantly, there is significant opportunity for Hazel Hawkins Hospital that the current Administration and Board are just not pursuing.
  • When a board member was notified that she was subject to being recalled from office, the official response came from the San Benito County Health Care District. A public agency cannot get involved in the politics of office holders.
